Laser-Cut Wooden Records Give New Meaning to ‘Tree Rings’ or ‘Organic’. “Amanda Ghassaei, creator of the 3-D printed record, is at it again, this time with lasers. Diverting from additive manufacturing to subtractive, Ghassaei etched tracks on another medium — wood — using a 120-watt Epilog Legend EXT laser cutter. The strains of Radiohead’s “Idioteque” and The Velvet Underground’s “Sunday Morning” are easily recognizable, but infused with an almost electric whine, a strange sound to hear emanating from a piece of wood. Ghassaei is a software engineer at Instructables, so she naturally published a how-to on the DIY site.”
A rather icy package, nice pairing of the clear vinyl with Robert Zandvliet’s 2010 painting “Winter bij Jouswier”.
Jean Michel Basquiat’s Old Band Gray gets a Debut Release, Visit Plush Safe Records for a preview, or order from Amazon, or from iTunes, although vinyl from Other Music is highly suggested. Check out Glenn O’Brien’s GQ article “Gray Matters…Rambling reminiscence of Basquiat and His Orchestra”
“This multi-track compilation includes and involves sample tracks from Gray’s earliest recordings and performances, with samples of Basquiat’s music and voice. Included is a solo performance by Basquiat (recorded by Justin Thyme) called “Suicide Hotline,” where Basquiat, in 1980, called a suicide hotline, and in dramatic, and darkly teasing fashion, reads bits of his poetry to the hotline operator, never allowing the operator to know for sure if the “caller” is insane, suicidal, or simply toying with him. The effect of the piece is powerful and disturbing, yet poignant and moving in a way only Basquiat could produce. Other tracks range from Stockhausen inspired fugues, to trip hop lanced throw downs.”
Got rid of some colored 7” on ebay recently that I had doubles of, goodbye to: XTC Life Begins At The Hop (Clear Vinyl) 1979, and UK Subs, C.I.D., City Records Orange Vinyl
Morrissey’s Reshot Cover for “What Difference Does It Make?” via Put the Needle on the Record: The 1980s at 45 Revolutions Per Minute by Matthew Chojnacki, contains a foreword by Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters and an afterword by Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran
Tron: Legacy Translucence 10” Special Edition 4 Track Vinyl - This great looking package was supposed to get a special release for Record Store Day, but Universal Music pulled the plug on production at the last minute, seeing as pre-orders were through the roof, distributors are pissed.
Minimal Wave Records - “Veronica Vasicka is a photographer, musician, DJ and founder of the epic record label and on-line music resource Minimal Wave. As one of the founding members of East Village Radio, she managed the station during its pirate days and began collecting obscure and long forgotten gems that fell somewhere between the Cold Wave, Post Punk and Minimal Synth genres. Not knowing what to classify these bands as, she coined the genre Minimal Wave and set up the website Minimalwave.org as an online resource to share her finds with the rest of the world.”
Rare Pink Diamond Fetches $45.75m (€33.85m) at Sothebys - I’m not normally one for fancy diamonds and jewels but this is an outrageous record. The rectangular pink diamond, which weighs 24.78 carats, set between shield shaped diamond shoulders, is about the size of a pinball, it is now the world’s most expensive jewel sold at auction, bought by the British billionaire jeweller Laurence Graff.
