MOCA director calls the fiasco a communication mishap that would have offended the nearby community, reactions are mixed. Corporate whore and street art appropriator Shepard Fairey proves once again, that his stupidity is matched only by his lack of talent; runs to Deitch’s defense.
Jeffrey Deitch Censors Blu’s Political Street Art Mural - More Censorship! Los Angeles MOCA director Jeffrey Deitch ordered the whitewash of a large antiwar, anti-capitalist mural painted by the Italian street artist known as Blu, that was commissioned by the museum for the north wall of the Geffen Contemporary as part of its “Art in the Streets” exhibition (Blu Documents Here). A gigantic field of military-style coffins draped by large dollar bills was painted over after Director Deitch deemed the mural unacceptable. MOCA has since issued a response.
Puzzling move by longtime street-art supporter Deitch, but I suppose if you aren’t making money off the street art in your gallery it might be deemed ‘too hot’ or ‘too dangerous’ for your space or museum, and we wouldn’t want to risk losing our brand new cushy position…what was that, I hear a clock ticking….you might remember Blu from his MUTO wall animations.
